Advancing the Mission of Academic Surgery by Promoting Scientific Writing Skills

For scientists forging academic careers, publication documents both their intellectual property and their productivity. The Scientific Publication Core provides scientific writing instruction, individual writing consultations, and editorial review for faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students with the goals of enhancing their chances of obtaining extramural grant funding and publishing their work.

Research is not complete until it has been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, and funding for research cannot be obtained without a skillful blend of technical and nontechnical writing that is targeted to the reviewers. Fortunately, scientific writing is based on fundamental principles that can be learned and practiced. The Publications Core offers an eight-week Scientific Writing Course annually. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, residents, and medical students working with a Department of Surgery faculty mentor can ask for editorial review and consultation.
