Advancing the Mission of Academic Surgery by Promoting Scientific Writing Skills

For scientists forging academic careers, publication documents both their intellectual property and their productivity. The Department of Surgery's Scientific Publications Office provides scientific writing instruction, individual writing consultations, and editorial review for faculty, fellows, and residents, with the goals of enhancing their chances of obtaining extramural grant funding and publishing their work.

Many scientists did not set out to become writers, but research is not complete until it has been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, and funding for research cannot be obtained without a skillful blend of technical and nontechnical writing that is targeted to the reviewers. Fortunately, scientific writing is based on fundamental principles that can be learned and practiced.  The Scientific Publications Office offers an intensive scientific writing course twice a year, in the Fall and Spring.  For more information about the course, click on the link above.  Editorial review and consultation is also available for Department of Surgery faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and residents.
